History and Forest Management of PT Rimba Makmur Sentosa

PT Rimba Makmur Sentosa initially obtained a Forest Concession (IUPHHK-HA) based on the Decree of the Regent of Malinau No. 522.11/03/EKPM/XII/2001 dated December 14, 2001, covering an area of 48,700 hectares. The concession was formerly part of PT Inhutani I – Bengalun Unit, whose extension was not approved under the Decree of the Minister of Forestry No. S.13/Menhut-VI/2007 dated January 5, 2007.

In 2007, the company received a renewal of its Forest Utilization License (IUPHHK-HA) through the Minister of Forestry Decree No. SK.178/Menhut-II/2007 dated May 1, 2007, with an initial area of 43,530 hectares, later finalized to 41,507 hectares after boundary verification. The concession is located in the S. Malinau Forest Group, Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan Province.

Between 2002 and 2007, no logging operations were conducted; activities were focused on forest planning and community engagement. During the 2012–2021 period, PT Rimba Makmur Sentosa developed a Forest Utilization Management Plan (RKUPHHK-HA) based on a Comprehensive Periodic Forest Inventory (IHMB), which was approved by the relevant authorities and endorsed by the Ministry of Forestry under Decree No. SK.52/BUHA-2/2012 dated June 27, 2012.

As of 2021, the company has realized forest utilization over an area of 10,482.22 hectares with a total timber production of 247,356.32 cubic meters. In its early operational years (2007–2008), the company primarily focused on socialization and groundwork for sustainable forest management.

Based on the Sustainable Production Forest Management (PHPL) performance assessment, PT Rimba Makmur Sentosa demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing PHPL principles across its operations and was awarded a “GOOD” performance rating under Certificate No. 53/A-SERT-PHPL/Kpts/XI/2016 dated November 22, 2016.

Environmental Management

The forest utilization activities of PT Rimba Makmur Sentosa cover an area of 41,553 hectares, focusing on timber harvesting with a production capacity of 76,121.46 m³ per year. During the period of July–December 2022, operations were carried out in accordance with the 2022 Annual Work Plan (RKT 2022).

In implementing these activities, the company manages and monitors potential environmental and social impacts as outlined in its Environmental Management and Monitoring Plans (RKL-RPL). From the physical and chemical aspects, attention is given to controlling soil erosion, water flow and quality, and sedimentation, which influence overall hydrological conditions. In the biological aspect, efforts are made to maintain stand quality and forest potential while protecting the habitat and diversity of wildlife within the operational area.

The social, economic, and cultural (sosekbud) aspects are also a key focus, particularly in creating employment opportunities, promoting community participation and education, and supporting environmental and public health in nearby areas. Monitoring activities include assessing soil quality, erosion rates, hydrological changes, forest stand density, and wildlife populations. Socially, the company aims to contribute to improving education, health, and the overall well-being of local communities involved in sustainable forest management.
